Angela Theatre holds off on more movies for better time
Coaldale’s Angela Theatre plans to reopen when conditions are better for the movie industry.
While many movie theaters have reopened nationwide, the number of releases, and box office revenue, still hasn’t come back from the pandemic.
Angela Theatre owner Mike Danchak Jr. said Wednesday that the theater hasn’t closed for good.
“We are going to reopen, we just don’t have a date yet,” Danchak said.
The theater opened briefly last September before closing its doors again.
Danchak said due to the slow recovery of the movie business, reopening doesn’t make sense right now.
“It’s just a matter of right time. It’s more a matter of sitting back and waiting for the storm to end,” Danchak said.
Nationwide, box office revenues during the month of July were less than half what they were during the same month in 2019, according to boxofficemojo.com. There were 89 movies released in July 2021 versus 190 in 2019.
Danchak said he hopes the theater will reopen in time for the holiday movie season, when more blockbuster movies are available for release. Long-anticipated movies like “Top Gun: Maverick” have release dates set for this fall.
He said the opening date could be earlier if studios stop releasing their movies on streaming services at the same time they’re released in theaters.
The Angela Theatre has a history of overcoming challenges. Its late founder, Mike Danchak Sr., spent five years restoring the theater before it opened in 2000.
They haven’t received any assistance from the federal program set up to help shuttered venues like theaters and museums, but Danchak said they are still working toward that goal. In the meantime, there is an online fundraiser for the theater at https://gofund.me/65dde2ae.
The Angela is still open for rentals. In the spring, they hosted the Jim Thorpe Area High School drama club as they premiered the movie version of their musical, “West Side Story.” Anyone interested in rentals can contact the theater on Facebook by searching Angela Triplex Theatre.
