Woman questions use of Mahoning Drive-In Theatre
A Mahoning Township woman has questioned the use of the wildly popular Mahoning Drive-In Theatre.
Mary Lou Harvan told supervisors on Wednesday that she’s lived in the township for over 40 years.
“I’m happy the drive-in is doing great,” Harvan said. “Is this a campground or drive-in movie (theater)?”
Harvan then asked the board what the ordinances are, and urged the board to get an ordinance before the township has a situation similar to that of Beltzville.
“I don’t want a tent sitting in my backyard,” she said. “Is it a drive-in movie theater, a campground?”
Harvan said she’d like to know what is allowed, and what isn’t allowed, at the venue.
Contacted Thursday, zoning hearing board solicitor Matthew Schnell said the drive-in has put in for a variance for their camping.
Schnell said that an enforcement notice has been issued by the zoning hearing officer, and an appeal to that as well as a request for a variance has been filed.
However, he noted that a meeting has not officially been scheduled, as they are still waiting to hear from the parties involved.
Earlier this month, staff and devoted fans of the drive-in theater expressed their appreciation for the landmark, and then took in a special Monday night double feature.
The theater has been around for 72 years, however, the theater management only had a handshake deal to utilize the property.
In mid-July, it was announced that a green energy company had obtained a lease for the property and was taking the first steps toward getting approved to replace it with a solar farm.
That prompted a wealth of support from the theater’s fans - many of whom drive hours from surrounding states to attend screenings - who made graphics, posters, T-shirts and decorated their cars to show support.
