Monroe pedestrian killed by apparent drunken driver

A Monroe County pedestrian was struck and killed on Aug. 10 by an apparent drunken driver.

State police at Stroudsburg released information on the incident Thursday.

Troopers said the incident occurred along Milford Road at 8:28 p.m. in Middle Smithfield Township.

Troopers said they received a welfare check at 5241 Milford Road, (Route 209), at the request of a woman regarding her fiance, who did not return from a walk with their dog. She said the dog returned home on its own and appeared injured.

Troopers canvassed the area and were able to observe motor vehicle parts scattered about the road near an unresponsive man lying in a ditch off the road. It appeared the man had been struck by a vehicle. The man, 43 of East Stroudsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner. Troopers did not identify him.

On the same date at 8:52 p.m. troopers received a call from someone reporting that his female neighbor almost stopped in the middle of the road on Coolbaugh Road, almost hit a tree and had her car in a ditch. The caller said he was able to help get the woman out of the ditch and into her driveway but was concerned that she appeared intoxicated.

During the investigation, troopers identified the woman as being 62 and from East Stroudsburg. They declined to identify her, and said when they found her she was sitting inside the driver seat of her vehicle. The vehicle had heavy damage to the right side of the front bumper, with the headlight assembly cracked, the front windshield smashed on the passenger side, and the passenger side roof of the vehicle dented.

The damage observed, troopers said, as well as the parts missing from the vehicle, were consistent with the vehicle parts located near the male pedestrian’s body.

The woman was taken into custody and transported for a legal blood draw for suspicion of DUI.

Troopers said charges have been filed.
