COVID numbers rising

Schuylkill, Carbon and Lehigh are classified as having substantial community transmission while Monroe and Northampton have high rates, according to the latest data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC classifies transmission as low, moderate, substantial and high.

Schuylkill County had been classified in moderate status before the Sunday update.

The CDC recommends wearing a mask indoors in public if you live in an area with substantial or high transmission. Most of the country is classified as high transmission. Nationally, at least 71 percent of adults have a dose of the vaccine.

The seven-day average for Schuylkill County from Aug. 1-7 shows an increase of 83 cases of COVID-19, a 232 percent change. Schuylkill County has a 6.04% positivity rate. Testing for the virus has increased 54.94 percent, to 1,193, data show. Four people have been admitted to the hospital in that period. Deaths are not reported among county level data.

At least 60 percent of Schuylkill County residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

In Carbon County, 56 new cases are noted, a 250% change. The county has a 6.16 positivity rate, a 2.23% increase. Testing has increased to 796, a 108.38% uptick. No new patients have been admitted. So far, 59.2 percent of residents have at least one dose of the vaccine.

Lehigh County has 367 new cases and a 6.61 percent positivity rating, a 2.57% change. Testing has increased to 5,659, a 57.54% hike. There have been 24 new COVID-19 hospital admissions. At least 71 percent of county residents have at least one dose.

Monroe County reports 207 new cases and a 7.25 percent positivity rating, a 2.11 percent increase. Testing has spiked to 2,619, a 58.25% increase. Nine new patients have been admitted. To date, 55.3% of residents have a dose of the vaccine.

Northampton County has 478 new cases, a 171.59% hike. Data shows a 7.76 positivity rating, which is a 2.1% increase. Testing increased to 4,534, a 61.52% surge. There have been 14 new hospital admissions, a 55.56 % hike. So far, at least 70.5 percent of residents have at least one dose of the vaccine.
