Trooper fires at car fleeing from Monroe road rage incident

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a trooper-involves shooting, following a road rage incident in East Stroudsburg, Monroe County.

On Sunday at approximately 4:27 p.m. the Stroud Area Regional Police Department as investigating a report of a road rage incident on Brushy Mountain Road, Stroud Township, Monroe County involving a black Dodge Durango with tinted windows, operated by a black man, described as a thin build, wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

The driver of the black Durango chased the victims and pointed a handgun at them on two separate occasions. The victims immediately contacted 911 to report the incident.

Stroud Area Regional Police saw a black Dodge Durango with tinted windows traveling South on Brushy Mountain Road near the intersection with Paradise Trail. They conducted traffic stop on the vehicle in the Weis parking lot, N. Courtland St., East Stroudsburg, requesting the driver to get out of the car.

The driver from the traffic stop and a pursuit ensued. The driver went into the Lakeside Manor apartments where it rammed a marked Stroud Area Regional Police vehicle. The officer discharged his department issued handgun at the vehicle.

The pursuit continued out of the apartment complex onto Independence Road and into the parking area of East Stroudsburg Elementary School, onto Franklin Hill Road and then ending in the Wendy’s parking lot at Independence Road and N. Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg.

The driver was taken into custody. EMS treated the driver at the scene before transporting him to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Pocono. His name and condition were not released.

Police said charges will include assault, aggravated assault on law enforcement, fleeing and eluding.

The Pennsylvania State Police, Troop N, Major Case Team was activated and has assumed the investigation. Trooper Justin M. Leri, PSP-Stroudsburg Criminal Investigation Unit, is the primary investigator.
