Galen Glen Winery, 255 Winter Mountain Drive, Andreas, will host a fundraiser for Jim Thorpe Tour De Shore Team at the winery from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Members of the Jim Thorpe cycling team will be at the winery serving cheese plates and pulled pork sliders. Cash only please. The winery will also be donating $1 for every bottle of wine purchased during the event.
Team members Alice Wanamaker and Valerie Case under the direction of cycling team captain Sgt. Michael Dugan, planned the event as part of the team’s ongoing fundraising efforts.
“Last year our team brought over $10,000 in charitable contributions back to our local area,” said Wanamaker.
“Benefactors included the Carbon County Special Olympics and the Masons fund to purchase bicycles for underprivileged children. In addition the funds help support the families of fallen police officers, including local officers Cpl. Bryon Dixon and Cpl. Joshua Miller.”
When asked why she rides, Wanamaker said, “Our police officers are there for us every day, putting themselves on the line and this is my little way to give back and be there for them and their families.”
The Jim Thorpe team has grown from only two riders in 2011 to over 150 last year. It is the second-highest fundraising team participating in the 65-mile bicycle ride that takes place each year at the end of July. The Tour De Shore is a ride from The Irish Pub in Philadelphia to The Irish Pub in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The event was founded to raise money for children in need and families of fallen police officers. Since it began, the team has brought over $70,000 back to the local area.
