James B. Nothstein, Lehighton, won unanimous endorsement for the post of eastern vice commander of the Pennsylvania American Legion during the 30th District convention held in Lansford on Saturday.

The day’s events were climaxed by a parade in which thousands of people lined the streets to view the estimated 30 musical and marching units. County Commissioners Thomas A. Zimmerman, Mahoning Valley; Dr. James J. Dougherty, Jim Thorpe; and Ralph Mooney, Palmerton, joined the 2-mile route of march.

Robert Balliet of Lehighton was announced as the winner of the district’s oratorical contest. The award was presented to his father, Robert L., since the winner is attending the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh.
