Schuylkill approves prison contract
Commissioners approved a new medical care contract for the Schuylkill County Prison Wednesday.
PrimeCare will continue to provide the care for inmates. Effective dates are May 1 to April 30, 2026, with three additional one-year options. Cost is $1,348,016 a year. A previous amount was not mentioned.
Prison Warden David Wapinsky said he is happy with the company, which provides 24-hour medical attention. The prison board recommended renewal at its recent meeting.
The following action was also taken at the meeting:
• Schuylkill Women In Crisis, Schuylkill Community Action and Servants to All could benefit from an Emergency Solutions Grant the commissioners approved a resolution for. Application is made through the state Department of Community and Economic Development. The federal grant assists with housing, street outreach, emergency shelter needs and homeless prevention.
• Approved an agreement of sale and purchase of an agricultural easement in perpetuity of a 47.58 acre farm in Union Township owned by Glenn R. Hetherington. Commissioner Barron “Boots” Hetherington said the owner is giving up development rights on the farm.
• Entered into an agreement with Essentials Management Solutions of Pottsville for general consulting support service of $12,260 per month and project management services of $7,000 per month from July 1 to June 30, 2022. Price remains the same as past contract. Schuylkill Communications Director Scott Krater said the communications center had the contract for about 15 years. The center does not have fiscal employees, so the company assists them with state related concerns and project services.
• Entered into a service agreement with Kova Corp., Little Egg, New Jersey, for maintenance on a 2008 88 channel audiologist max pro recording system. Cost is $23,570 for one year effective Aug. 1 to July 31, 2022. No increase in price from previous contract.
• Budget adjustments of $850 for the communications center; $1,000 for the courts; $3,200 for the election bureau and $12,800 for drug and alcohol. Finance Director Paul Buber said the transfers are not increasing overall spending, but transferring budgetary authority.
