Carbon inmate charged with assaulting guard

A Carbon County Correctional Facility inmate is charged with assaulting a female corrections officer on July 4, according to Nesquehoning police.

Police said Albert Brooke, 63, of Nesquehoning, slammed a cart into the officer and pinned her against a door after the two got into an argument about Brooke's medication.Brooke was in prison after receiving a 34-to-68-month sentence for aggravated indecent assault and other charges. In his affidavit of probable cause released this week, Officer Timothy Wuttke said the officer was doing a "med pass" to inmates in the protective custody unit, when Brooke demanded he be given a pill. When the officer said it was not listed on Brooke's medicine list, officials said he got upset and begancalling her degrading names.Brooke attempted to spit on the officer when she tried to move him to the restricted housing unit of the prison, according to Wuttke. In a statement to police, however, Brooke said he was just clearing his throat.Later, Brooke allegedly swung his left fist at the officer when she tried to handcuff him. Additional officers arrived on the scene to help take him into custody.Brooke denied attempting to strike the officer, but said he did push the cart into her lightly and by accident because he thought "she was going through the door."Wuttke filed charges of assault by a prisoner, aggravated harassment by a prisoner, simple assault and harassment.Brooke is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m. in front of District Judge Casimir Kosciolek in Lansford.
