Participants brave weather for Fleetwood memorial run/walk

The Seventh Annual Dave Fleetwood Memorial Trail Run/Walk at the West End Regional Park in Chestnuthill Township on Sunday looked more like an umbrella convention than a race.

The race was not for the faint of heart, with wind, rain and 40-degree weather, but the crowd was in good spirits and up for the challenge.

The 3.1-mile trail run winds through 240 acres of open space property and includes a flat trail, an open field and woods trails.

Walkers in the race had several choices, the five-eighth mile portion of the flat trail, or the three-fourth mile field trail.

The 3.1 mile race/walk honors Dave Fleetwood, who was killed during a public meeting on Aug. 5, 2013, at the Ross Township Municipal Building in Saylorsburg.

All the proceeds go to the Dave Fleetwood Memorial Scholarship to recognize Pleasant Valley High School graduates who portray the outstanding attributes of Fleetwood.

To date, the Dave Fleetwood Memorial Fund has awarded more than $20,000 to deserving Pleasant Valley High School graduates.

Pamela Fleetwood, Dave Fleetwood’s widow, thanked the community for coming out and supporting the cause, despite the pouring rain, and thanked everyone who helped make the race so successful for the past seven years.

Overall winners were: Male, Josh Gillow; female, Olivia Fennell.

The Fleetwood 2021 scholarship recipients are Alec Shonk and Briella Kish of Pleasant Valley High School.
