Picnic, car show and tours slated for Sunday at Lansford coal mine

An exciting Memorial Day weekend is set for Sunday at the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford.

The coal mine will host its annual Miners’ Picnic and Anthracite Region Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The grounds will be filled with the wondrous smells of homemade ethnic foods coming from the picnic pavilion, the sights of beautiful antique, classic and street rod vehicles displayed on the grounds, the sounds of great music from DJ Shawn Frederickson,” said Dale Freudenberger, secretary.

“And the feel of cool air coming from the historic No. 9 Coal Mine, as visitors prepare to board the mine train for the one-hour underground tour of the world’s oldest deep mine, followed by a trip through the mining museum on the surface.”

The main attraction at No. 9 Mine is the guided underground tours of the mine, which first opened in 1855.

No. 9 Mine in Lansford is the world’s oldest, operating deep mine.

Tours are about one hour and include the mine train ride into the mine where visitors embark on a walking tour to see the sights, such as the massive elevator shaft, mule-ways, underground hospital, Go Devil, and the daily work areas of coal miners.

Beginning at 11 a.m., a variety of homemade ethnic foods will be available for purchase at the picnic pavilion. Favorites include halupki, halushki, pierogies, turkey barbecue, hamburger barbecue, ham and bean soup, hot dogs, salads, homemade desserts and a variety of beverages.

Freudenberger said the old-fashioned picnic is reminiscent of the annual coal miners’ picnics, which were held throughout the coal region.

Anyone interested in displaying their automobile at the car show should register upon arrival at no cost.

Admission to the grounds, car show and parking are free. A nominal fee is charged for the mine tours, museum, and food. The event is rain or shine. Call 570-645-7074 or visit no9mine.com for information.
