Empty bowl pottery event will begin April 2

The Tamaqua Community Art Center and Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship network are combining forces to combat hunger.

The TAFFN's Third Annual Hunger Walk will be held on May 15 and organizers are planning ways to expand the activities in a variety of ways. One of those expansions will be an "Empty Bowl Pottery Making Event" at the art center. The pottery making event will be held on April 2, April 9 and April 23. It is open to all ages and no experience is necessary. Participants will learn how to throw clay and use molds to craft and paint bowls, which will then be glazed and fired. The completed bowls will be used at the "Empty Bowl Dinner" on May 14 at the Zion Lutheran Church. The ceramic bowls will be given as reminders to those attending of the people who go to bed hungry every day in their community. The bowl making is being spearheaded by Craig Bulger and Irene Miller, who offer a variety of pottery related classes at the art center. Their goal is to have 25 bowls completed in time for the dinner and need the public's help to ensure that happens. All aspects of creating the bowls will be done at the art center, where Bulger has several pottery wheels and a kiln. For more information, stop in at the art center, 125 Pine St. in Tamaqua, or call 570-668-1192.A Family Film Night is also planned and organizers had hoped to hold a community concert, but need someone to organize such an event.Anyone interested in helping may contact Dodson at 570-668-0289 or at
