St. John Neumann gets tuition grant
A grant from a generous foundation will help make student tuition at St. John Neumann Regional School affordable.
Officials at St. John Neumann Regional School, with campuses in Palmerton and Slatington, recently received a large grant from the Julius and Katheryn Hommer Foundation.
The gift was directed to the school’s family assistance fund that helps pay for annual tuition costs, as well as the operating budget of the two campuses, according to Principal Mary Comensky.
“This generous award will make a significant difference for many families who want to choose SJNRS, but simply cannot manage tuition expenses,” Comensky said. “The strength of our school continues to be our outstanding faculty, students, and families, and this gift will allow us to remain affordable for those who wish to attend.”
Comensky noted that the Hommer Foundation, under the trusteeship of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Kern, has provided financial support to SJNRS since 2007.
“Mr. Kern has volunteered at SJNRS for many years, as a member the Advisory Board and as Mentor of the School’s Chess Club,” she said. “In those roles, he stated that “he has gained a deep appreciation for the high educational standards of the school and for the dedication, courteous attitude, and desire for learning of its students.”
St. John Neumann Regional School, the last surviving Catholic school in Carbon County, serves families from kindergarten through eighth grade, and attracts students from Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Monroe counties.
Transportation is provided by Palmerton, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Pleasant Valley, Northampton, Northern Lehigh, and Parkland school districts.
The school is also supported by Sacred Heart Parish in Palmerton, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Slatington, and St. Nicholas Parish in Walnutport. The three pastors who make up the school’s administration are the Rev. Eric Arnout, the Rev. William Campion, and the Rev. Adam Sedar, respectively.
St. John Neumann Regional School has a track record of academic achievement, and has earned Middle States accreditation with a curriculum that focuses on education the mind, body, and soul.
Enrollment to SJNRS is open to families of all faiths.
