Gary Reph was already known for being a fine, upstanding citizen in the Bowmanstown community that he so cherishes.
Now, he has the unique distinction of being the inaugural recipient of the borough’s Neighbor of the Month award.
Reph was recognized at Tuesday’s borough council meeting after Mayor Zach Snyder presented him with the accolade.
Snyder said Reph, a resident of the borough for the past 20 years, lives with his wife and two sons.
“Many of you know Gary from his annual award-winning light show, but he has been active in the community for many years,” Snyder said. Always out lending a hand, pitching in for his neighbors, and offering a warm hello, this past winter Gary went above and beyond.
“Working tirelessly, clearing snow for those on his block both before and after his shift at work, Gary consistently downplayed his efforts. Being thanked by those around him, Gary’s reply was always, simply, “That’s what neighbors do.”
Snyder said when he asked Reph why he liked living in the borough, he didn’t even hesitate.
“I love the small-town feel,” Reph said.
Snyder added, “he’s a big part of that feel. Neighbors helping neighbors.
“Shellee and I are proud to call you both a neighbor and a friend,” Snyder said. “Thank you for all that you do for our community.”
Reph thanked the borough for the award.
Snyder said the award will be given out monthly, with a framed acknowledgment.
