A Palmerton man has been charged with assaulting a woman over a bicycle that was allegedly stolen.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Dane O’Brien of the Palmerton Borough Police Department:
At 8:57 p.m. July 18, O’Brien was dispatched to the 100 block of Lehigh Avenue for a report of a domestic dispute, and that the suspect was reported to have left the scene in a silver Chevrolet Equinox toward the Delaware Avenue Apartment Complex.
O’Brien talked to the victim, who said that her brother-in-law, Raymond Mayers Jr., 33, was over at her residence earlier in the evening to collect his mother’s belongings being stored inside her residence.
While doing so, they argued over a bicycle that was allegedly stolen. The argument escalated and resulted in Mayers pushing the victim into a wall while attempting to re-enter her residence.
The victim said that during this incident, she was holding her 3-year-old son, and that her son fell out of her hands into her other son, who is 2 years old.
The victim said that she put up her arms as Mayers struck at her, which resulted in a minor abrasion on her right forearm.
O’Brien attempted to contact Mayers at his residence.
Officers returned to the station to retrieve a statement from Mayers and start the process of getting an emergency protection from abuse order. They were dispatched to Mayers’ residence for an unrelated incident.
While being processed in the unrelated incident, Mayers admitted to pushing the victim, but denied ever hitting her.
Mayers faces charges of simple assault and harassment.
He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Oct. 2 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
