West Penn VFW needs veterans for township memorial

Members of General George S. Patton VFW Post 5069 hope to muster West Penn Township veterans, so that their names can be added to the township's memorial.

At the same time, they'd like to enlist new members."Joining a VFW helps people keep up to date on what we need to know as veterans," said post trustee Glenn Stevens. "There's also a camaraderie that you will find with other servicemen and women."To be eligible for inclusion on the West Penn Memorial, veterans must have been residents of the township at the time they joined the military. Also, they must have joined the military during the times the United States was engaged in a conflict.Service in a combat zone is not required, and it's not required that the veteran remain a resident of West Penn Township after military service.Currently, the memorial includes names from World War I and II, the Korean War and Vietnam, with no representation for veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan."Who knows, we could even be missing someone from World War II," said Quartermaster Harold Osenbach. "We're reaching out to find people who served, because we'd like to get them on the memorial."Anyone who wants more information should contact Stevens, 570-386-2133 or Osenbach, 570-386-5444, no later than May 30.
