Touchdown Club holds egg hunt fundraiser

The Jim Thorpe Touchdown Club held an Easter egg hunt fundraiser Saturday at the Jim Thorpe Olympian Football Stadium.

Events at the fundraiser included a free Easter hunt for children ages 1 through 10, pictures with the Easter Bunny and a bake sale.

Masks and social distancing were required throughout the event.

From 9 a.m. until noon, three separate rounds of Easter egg hunts were held each hour. Within each egg hunt, children were divided according to age with one section of the football field assigned to ages 1-3, another for ages 4-6 and the last for ages 7-10.

Each plastic egg contained either candy or a prize ticket which kids could exchange for toys such as hula hoops, butterfly nets or bubbles.

The event offered photos with the Easter Bunny for a fee of $10 and allowed up to five individuals or family members in the picture. If with family members, attendees were allowed to take their masks off for these photos.

Additionally, members of the Touchdown Club sold a variety of baked goods such as cookies and cupcakes in which a majority were baked by club members themselves.

Event organizer and Touchdown Club member Vivian Capria said this was the first time that the club has hosted this fundraiser.

“We have had the Touchdown Club Easter Bunny breakfast in the past, but due to COVID we have had restrictions and last year’s breakfast was canceled. So we kind of tried to put a new spin on it this year just to give back to the community as well as try to raise funds for the Touchdown Club.”

She said by having an event like an Easter egg hunt outdoors, it allowed for better social distancing compared to indoors.

Capria explained that the proceeds from the fundraiser would directly benefit the football players including their outfits and hoagies for their away games.

She also noted that many donations for the event, such as the Easter egg hunt prizes, came from members of the Touchdown Club and outside businesses. Capria specifically thanked Mary Enck for being the event’s biggest donor.

“Any outside monetary donations and donations of any sort is always good, especially during this time, to help us make the community thrive and help the student-athletes have the most successful and memorable year,” Capria said.
