Local Roundup: Results from March 27
Three area baseball teams opened their season Saturday with wins.
Lehighton, Jim Thorpe and Panther Valley also posted victories to start the year at 1-0.
BASEBALL
Lehighton-No. Lehigh
Grant Schaeffer had two hits and knocked in four runs to help Lehighton gain a 10-4 non-league victory over host Northern Lehigh.
The Indians also received a pair of hits and two RBIs from Dylan Bowman, while Max Hoffman added a hit and scored two runs.
The winners were shut out through the first three innings by Bulldog starter Ryan Hammond, but Lehighton pushed across three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to take control.
Richie Failla also had two RBIs and a run for the Indians, with Randy Bongiorno chipping in with two runs and an RBI.
For Northern Lehigh, Hammond finished with two hits, one a double, and a pair of runs, while Grant Olewine had a hit and two runs scored.

Notre Dame (ES)
Jared Marykwas had five hits and knocked in four runs to lead Jim Thorpe to a 13-5 non-league victory over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg in its season opener.
Ian Hubbard also had a big day at the plate for the Olympians, finishing with two hits and five RBIs. One of Hubbard’s hits was a home run. Jared Joyce added two hits, one a triple, two RBIs and four runs scored, while Caiden Hurley had a hit and scored three times.
Marykwas struck out nine in four innings, while Michael Cadugan-Dougherty tossed two scoreless innings in relief to gain the win.

Panther Valley
A strong pitching performance by Derek Pavlik allowed Panther Valley to open its season with a 3-1 non-league win over Shenandoah Valley.
Pavlik allowed just six hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven while walking one. Brad Hood recorded the final out to earn the save.
Pavlik also paced PV offensively, collecting two hits and knocking in a pair of runs. The Panthers also received a hit and run scored from Michael Pascoe.

SOFTBALL
Notre Dame (ES)-
Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe’s Jada Mahmde drilled a three-run homer but it wasn’t enough as the Olympians dropped an 8-4 non-league contest to Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg.
Thorpe (0-2) banged out 10 hits, including three by Kristin Pompa and two by Carson Rosenberger, who also scored a pair of runs. Mahmde ended with four RBIs, while one of Pompa’s hits was a double.
The Spartans, however, finished with 14 hits, two of them homers by J. Pansy and M. Schnatter.
A. Martinet also contributed a double and two RBIs.

Hannah DeAngelo collected three hits, one of them a three-run homer, to lead Shenandoah Valley to a 16-1 victory over Panther Valley.
The winners also received a triple and homer from Ava Menjivar.
The Panthers (0-1) received a double from Brenna Beshock.

Northwestern
Northwestern opened its season with a 14-2 non-league win over Bethlehem Catholic on Friday.
Andrew Collins had three goals and three assists for the Tigers (1-0), while Drew Sabo scored twice and dished out four assists.
The scoring also featured three goals from Kane Flickinger and two apiece from Noah Smargiassi, Zach Fry and Austin Sosnovik.
