Former Thorpe soccer star heading to Spain

A former Times News Soccer Player of the Year has an opportunity to chase his dream this summer.

Thor Huth, the former Jim Thorpe soccer star, is heading to Alicante, Spain, in June in hopes of getting signed to a professional club.

“I was supposed to go out to Spain for a showcase in August for a couple of weeks,” said Huth. “I was talking to my club coach. … I told him about what I was doing, and he told me to wait - that he was talking to the coach of Alicante. … They emailed me and asked me to come do a trial in Spain for three months.”

In the first month, Huth will be playing with Alicante’s team doing training and fitness.

During the second month, he will play against other professional clubs. And the third month, Huth will do trials with the other clubs to play in front of their coaches in hopes of being signed after that.

“In my opinion, going over to Spain or England, is better to try and improve your soccer career. In the states, nobody really cares about soccer, it’s all about football.”

There isn’t much Huth can’t do on the pitch. He mopped up competition in the states.

The former Jim Thorpe soccer star frustrated opposing teams and coaches across District 11 throughout his high school career. Huth scored 19 times during his senior campaign and won the 2019 TN Player of the Year award.

“When you’re playing for a high school, not everyone wants to pursue a future in that sport,” Huth said. “When you’re playing club or overseas, everyone wants to move forward in that sport, and normally are a lot more talented.”

It’s not the first time Huth has gone to compete internationally.

Earlier in his teens, Huth played in both Spain and Belize for a few weeks at a time. Huth played in the Donosti Cup years ago, which he compared to a youth World Cup. He said it’s necessary to have a longer sample size to showcase his skills.

“Being there for three months (upcoming in Spain), the whole point is when you’re playing with the teams, you can actually get comfortable playing with them, so they can actually see your skill level,” Huth said. “When you’re just moving around and playing with different people, you have no chemistry with other players.”

During the pandemic, Huth has done everything possible to stay prepared for whatever comes next.

“In the past few months, I’ve gone to Atlanta for a professional combine, Florida and New York. Other than that, I go to the Pyramid (in Lehighton) or go to the gym and work out to try and get a little bit bigger.”

During his three-month journey, Huth will be put up to live in a villa, which he explained is similar to an academy. His high school coach, Michael Dudak, said it’s a one-year deal to head to Alicante, but the original commitment is three months.

“What’s so great about him, he’s an aerial player,” Dudak said. “You don’t really see that - that’s where his magic comes from. Stuff he’s doing in the air that I can’t teach, it’s instinctual.

“It’s a really good opportunity for him. He will play a style of soccer that really will help him grow in a short amount of time. ... If nothing happens (at the end of it), he spends a year in Spain. It’s a great experience being around a bunch of great soccer people, and he’ll grow about five years in just one year.”

Not only will Huth compete every day to pursue his dream, but he’ll have to learn and adapt to a new culture for at least 90 days. There are many upcoming challenges on and off the pitch, but he’s ready.

“It’s something I always wanted to do and have been waiting for,” Huth said. “When I played in Spain, I realized it was bigger than I ever realized. The skill level was so much higher than I ever saw.”

Huth it set to depart for Spain on June 1.
