No injuries in 5-car crash in Lehighton

No one was injured during a five-car crash Thursday afternoon on the McCall bridge in Lehighton.

Lehighton police officer Mike Svetik said the incident occurred at 12:16 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 443 and 209 on the McCall Bridge.

Svetik said the person who initiated the crash was a 64-year-old woman from Palmerton who was apparently having a medical issue at the time. He declined to release the woman’s name.

Svetik said the woman’s vehicle struck the first vehicle which was waiting on 443 to turn left onto 209, and continued on the bridge striking another vehicle stopped at the light going off the bridge onto 443, before it then struck another vehicle behind that one. Her vehicle caromed off it and came across that lane and a vehicle traveling in the right lane to go onto 209 toward the bridge, where it struck another vehicle and continued about 30 to 40 feet, coming to rest on a sidewalk of the bridge.

Svetik said there were no apparent injuries.

“It could have been a lot worse, with the time of day and rain,” he said.

Svetik said it’s uncertain whether any charges will be filed, as the incident remains under investigation.

“There was some kind of medical issue,” he said. “It wasn’t careless driving.”

Svetik said the bridge was shut down for about 45 minutes, and motorists were detoured through Weissport.

He said assisting at the scene were the Franklin Township Police Department, Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton fire police, and Lehighton medics who transported the woman to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest.
