March 11, 1972 - Lehighton’s George Barkanic earns a pin in the finals to capture the Northeastern Regional heavyweight title and earn a trip to states. Barkanic gains a hard-fought 11-7 victory over Terry Bankus of Berwick in the semifinals before meeting Mark Zane of Crestwood in the championship round. The Indian senior, who also qualified for states in his junior year, gains a quick escape in the third period before registering a fall of Zane in 4:40 to grab the regional gold medal.
