Baby pot-bellied pig found in box taped shut

A small pot-bellied pig was found in a box taped shut in a wooded area of Schuylkill County.

A woman walking her dog Monday “stumbled” upon the pig between Middleport and Kaska, Lori Sult, Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA, Pine Grove, shelter manager said Tuesday.

“It’s definitely a baby. Its baby teeth are just starting to poke out,” she said of the approximate 4-week-old pig, which is too young to be away from its mother.

Sult said it was 16 degrees Monday. Daphne, the name shelter workers gave the pig found in a blanket, didn’t suffer adverse health conditions from the cold as it was kept warm when found and transported to the shelter.

“Domestic pigs cannot survive in temperatures like we are having,” she said.

She estimated the pig weighs 2 pounds, about 1 pound under weight. Its skin is in good condition. Sult doesn’t know why the woman called the Pine Grove shelter, but reasoned it might be because it has cared for pigs in the past.

“In the last two years, we took in probably at least 10 pigs,” Sult said.

Daphne is resting comfortably in a cage with a comforter at the shelter, eating pig pellets, formula and vegetables. The pig was “pretty darn hungry” when it was found, she said.

Resources are available if someone can no longer care for animals, she said.

“There is no reason ever to abandon an animal,” she said.

The pig will receive veterinary care and be spayed. A sanctuary upstate, which has adopted pigs from the shelter before, will give Daphne a home.

Donations are accepted for her care.

“We can use gift cards from Tractor Supply. When we get farm animals in, we usually don’t have the supplies,” Sult said.
