Schuylkill County NAACP branch forms

Schuylkill County now has its own NAACP branch.

The organization does not have a physical location but is looking to acquire one in Pottsville, Don Snowell, organizing committee chairperson, said.

“We have probably 200 members,” he said, adding most are white.

The organization applied in November and was granted its official designation Feb. 20.

At least 100 members must join for status to be approved at the national and state level. The cost is $30 for adult and $15 for youth level.

“We’re here to help and we want people to join. There is a lot of things you can do to help,” Snowell said.

He said the organization will be active in the community, “working with the community at every level.”

“We are here together living to make the community better,” he said.

Lanique Golphin, a member of the organizing committee, said the social unrest in 2020 was the impetus for the organization forming.

“George Floyd’s death was a huge spark across the nation,” she said.

Golphin said there was a county NAACP branch years ago but it ceased to exist after members dropped out.

Numerous committees meet via Zoom to discuss topics. The organization has not held a group meeting since being officially recognized.

“There are going to be things we are going to take a stance over,” Snowell said.
