Lehighton day care students celebrate Read Across America week
It was a week chock-full of activities for children at a Lehighton day care center.
The school-age children at Curious Kids Play and Learn Place decided to celebrate Read Across America week by reading different Dr. Seuss books and making projects based on the books.
Monday’s theme was “What Pet Should I Get,” as the children made fish bowls and created a pet they wanted.
On Tuesday for lunch, the school’s virtual children had green eggs and ham. After school, guest reader Martha Cox (a retired elementary teacher from Lehighton Area School District) read “Fox in Socks” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” They also made Dr. Seuss hats and Fox in Socks puppets. Additionally, the children had cupcakes and Cat in the Hat kebabs made out of marshmallow, bananas and strawberries.
Wednesday’s theme was “Oh the Thinks You Can Think,” and the children did a Cat in the Hat project.
On Thursday, the theme was “The Lorax”: making Lorax trees out of different material.
Friday’s theme was “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” hot air balloon project.
Kate Spayder, who serves as director of the day care center in Lehighton, said the children kept busy.
“The children have been enjoying different learning experiences - rhyming, hands-on learning, reading, sight words, experimenting with different art materials, watching videos of the stories and playing carnival games themed Cat in the Hat,” Spayder said.
The day care also has a center in Franklin Township.
Both of the centers are owned by Charlene Behney.
