Office space move is considered

East Penn Township's staff may be outgrowing its office space.

Zoning Officer Richard Dietrich told supervisors Monday night he thinks the township office should be relocated from 167 Municipal Road to a portion of the East Penn Social Hall. The supervisors currently hold their monthly meetings at the Social Hall, 403 Blue Mountain Road."At the current office, all the filing cabinets are full, there are stacks of paper everywhere and you can't work effectively," Dietrich said. "To me, the Social Hall is a white elephant. Let's put it to use."Township Secretary Deanna Cunfer, who is also a supervisor, said she wouldn't oppose the change."We don't have anywhere to go anymore at the office," she said. "Our drawer with subdivision plans is full. We would need a lot more filing cabinets."Supervisor Chairman Dean Kercsmar said the board could hash it out during budget discussions for 2016, but he also welcomes the input of residents."I'll do whatever the taxpayers want," he said. "They're the ones paying for it. We're taxpayers too as supervisors, but I hope people can come to the budget meetings to talk about this."Jason Rapa, a township resident and an attorney in Lehighton, asked if the township had looked into digitizing its records."We have 10 years of files scanned and millions of pages of paper," Rapa said. "We have backups in a fireproof vault. The problem isn't going to go away, even if you move. You're always going to accumulate more paperwork."Cunfer said she'd talk to Rapa about how to start digitizing paperwork, but some documents have to be kept on file.In other business, the township accepted the resignation of engineer Bruce Steigerwalt, effective Monday.Hanover Engineering Associates, of Bethlehem, was tabbed to replace Steigerwalt.
