High Speed Car Chase Suspect Identified

(Updated 7:44 p.m.)

Police are looking for a Palmerton man who evaded capture on foot after a high-speed chase through Carbon and Northampton Counties Friday night.

Palmerton police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Jacob Taschler, who is wanted in connection with two recent burglaries, and is awaiting a preliminary hearing on a third.

Taschler fled on foot in the area of Route 946 and Olive Road in Lehigh Township after abandoning his vehicle.

Police have asked for the public's help in finding Taschler. He has been described as a white male, approximately six-feet tall, with a thin build.

The chase began after an officer spotted Taschler driving a vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station in the borough Friday evening. When officers attempted to stop his vehicle, he fled, Sgt. Christopher Ritter said.

The chase passed through Palmerton Borough, Lower Towamensing Township, and Lehigh Township. Police from several agencies, including Palmerton, Lehigh Township, and Colonial Regional responded.

According to police scanner transmission during the chase, Taschler hit speeds of 100 mph as he fled police on routes 248 and 946. At times, he drove into oncoming traffic, nearly striking vehicles head on.

Police were about to call off the chase when Taschler drove into a field, then a wooded area, where his car became disabled and he fled on foot.

Tracking dogs and a thermal camera were subsequently used, but Taschler still managed to avoid capture as of 6:45 pm Friday night.

Palmerton Police are asking anyone with information on Taschler let's whereabouts to contact them at 610-826-4055 or call 911.
