Crews from three counties responded to a dwelling fire in Lehigh Township Friday morning.
Lehigh Township Assistant Fire Chief John Haggerty said the fire broke out at 8:40 a.m. at the home at 607 Cherry Road, and was reported as a working garage fire attached to the house.Upon arrival, Haggerty said firefighters encountered heavy smoke from the garage side of the house, but no flames shooting from the exterior of the home.Haggerty said the initial point of attack for firefighters was through the front door to the second floor. He said firefighters opened up the garage, made their attack, and started ventilation. At that point the fire broke through the roof, and additional teams were sent to fight the fire.Though the occupants were home at the time, they were able to escape without injury, Haggerty said.He said occupants did sustain minor smoke inhalation and drove themselves to the hospital. They are staying with friends and/or family.Haggerty said firefighters had the blaze under control by 10 a.m., but remained on scene with the fire marshal until 1 p.m.Half of the home sustained moderate damage, while the other half appears to be salvageable, he said.Haggerty thanked the firefighters from surrounding departments in Northampton, Lehigh and Carbon counties who assisted at the scene."Without them, we could not have accomplished what we did today," he said.Haggerty said the cause of the fire is unknown, and remains under investigation.
