A Lansford man who witnesses say ran from the scene of a car crash and later reported his car stolen has been charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and other offenses.
Tamaqua police responded to the 600 block of East Broad Street in Tamaqua Dec. 8 for a crash that resulted in a rollover. They found a white BMW on its roof that had hit a parked Saturn that was pushed into a truck.
A witness helped pull the man later identified as Ian Corey Hamilton, 38, from the car.
Witnesses said Hamilton ran from the scene after seeing police. He later called Carbon County Communication Center to report his car stolen. Lansford Police responded to his address in Lansford, transporting him back to the scene where witnesses identified him.
Police noticed a “very strong odor of alcohol” on Hamilton’s breath. He was later taken to a hospital for a blood draw. Results indicate a blood alcohol concentration of 0.146, court documents show.
Three bottles of liquor were found in the area of the car, police said. One was next to the vehicle, an empty one on the sidewalk and another in the car.
Marijuana was also found near the car.
Police charged Hamilton with a misdemeanor charge of DUI controlled substance-combination alcohol drugs first offense, and summary charges of accidental damage to unattended vehicle or property, failure to notify police of accident or damage to vehicle, reckless driving, careless driving, driving at safe speed, prohibiting text-based communications, and failure to notify change in address and notice of change of name or address.
A preliminary hearing is set for 11:45 a.m. March 9 in front of Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer.
