Something old, something new
When one door closes, another one opens.
V.K. Bridal Couture wasn't looking for the door to close on its store in Palmerton, but when the building sold and the store owners were told they would need to move, a door opened for a new store in Walnutport. Now located along Route 145, V.K. Bridal is planning its grand reopening celebration for March 4 through 9. The event will include drawings for $100 off bridal gowns, $50 off mother-of-the-bride dresses, and $25 off bridesmaids' dresses, plus discounts of 10 percent off orders and 20 percent off discontinued gowns.Victoria Klotz, who co-owns the shop with her daughter Krysti Klotz, said she is very happy with the new location and has seen an increase in traffic from Walnutport and Slatington, but Palmerton fans still find her, too. The shop actually opened for business in early January."Everybody loves it," she said. The Walnutport residents "are happy that they have a bridal shop in their area."A converted house, the shop is located behind Kmart and the St. Luke's Family Practice with parking alongside the building. The entrance opens into the room where the bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride gowns are displayed and dressing rooms.Down the hallway are the bridal gowns with dressing rooms, and the prom gowns are upstairs. There is also a room upstairs for the tux shop.Walk-ins are welcome, but she encourages appointments."We offer a more private, personalized service and accommodations," she said.Palmerton resident Jackie Rivera said she has been a patron of V.K. Bridal since 1992, when it was owned by Ann Margaret's Bridal Boutique."I like the location," she said. "I like this house. It's very cute."Rivera brought her daughter to the shop in search of a prom dress, which she found."I love it," Justine Weaver said about her new dress.Weaver said she came to the shop with a picture of Selena Gomez in a gown she wore to the Grammy Awards in hopes she could find something similar. When she arrived, the clerk told her they had the dress, just in a lighter color. Not a problem, it wasn't the color that Weaver came there seeking, it was the style. Her dress is a mixture of sequins in shades of blue and some green - reminiscent of the shades of water sparkling in the sunlight."I like it a lot," Rivera said about her daughter's dress. "I wish I could have worn it when I was in high school."The store keeps track of what schools the girls attend so they don't sell the same dress to another girl from that school. Klotz said she has a variety of styles in her shop from a variety of designers. Popular this year is the two-piece gown, which is what Taylor Swift wore to the Grammys this year."It's coming back," Klotz said. "Beaded and sequined, too." Her daughter wore one to the prom about 10 years ago.As far as wedding dresses, Klotz is happy to see that strapless gowns are not the in style this year. Strapless gowns are not the best choice for every figure, she said."I'm glad to see they're bringing more of a strap back on the dresses," she said. "Lots of lace is more trendy, too."The straps allow for an open back, an area designers are focusing on - and so are brides.
