Man charged with fleeing police after assaulting girlfriend
A Walnutport man has been charged with fleeing police after assaulting his girlfriend.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Sgt. Philip Mirabile of the Lehigh Township Police Department in the case against Roy Schlegel Jr.:
At 11:50 p.m. Dec. 3, Mirabile and patrolman Robert Manogue were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Blue Mountain Drive for a domestic report.
Police spoke with the victim, who said that her boyfriend, Schlegel, 33, assaulted her in Allentown, punching her in the head and injuring her hand.
The victim said Schlegel pulled her out of the driver’s seat and drove to a gas station in Allentown. She said when he was inside the gas station, she escaped and reported the incident to the Allentown Police Department.
The victim said that Schlegel also stole her vehicle, and that her phone was inside. There was a felony warrant for Schlegel issued from the Lehigh Township Police Department.
The victim said she had been staying with a friend in Allentown and decided to go home, where she lives with her parents. When she arrived home, she saw that Schlegel was talking to her parents. She told her parents to call the police, and Schlegel fled the residence at a high rate of speed.
Mirabile went to the victim’s parents’ residence to determine if Schlegel was still there. The parents said that the victim has been in a relationship with Schlegel for a couple of weeks and he has been staying at their residence in the rear addition, which has a separate entrance.
Mirabile said that Schlegel had warrants and they should call police if he returned to the residence. The victim’s mother told Mirabile that she remembered Schlegel saying earlier, “What if I kidnapped your daughter.”
At 1:52 a.m. police were dispatched to the home because Schlegel was at the rear of the residence. Mirabile parked in front of the house and didn’t see the vehicle, but as he was walking down the driveway, he heard a vehicle rev the engine and saw headlights coming toward him.
Mirabile turned and began running toward his vehicle and yelled for Manogue to use his vehicle to block the driveway. Schlegel managed to narrowly flee in between Mirabile’s and another vehicle. Police pursued Schlegel on Butternut Drive to Cedar Drive. They estimated that Schlegel was traveling at over 70 mph.
Schlegel got out of the vehicle on Cedar Drive and ran. Police requested the Northampton Police Department K-9 unit to respond, but were unable to locate Schlegel.
At 11:17 a.m. Nov. 29, Schlegel requested a phone call from Lehigh Township Police Department. He wanted to know why there was a warrant out for him.
Police advised him to turn himself in.
Schlegel laughed and said, “I ain’t going back to jail” and “you won’t catch me sleeping again.”
He faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude officer; flight to avoid apprehension/trial/punishment; stalking; resisting arrest/other law enforcement; recklessly endangering another person; driving while operating privilege is suspended/revoked; reckless driving and careless driving.
He is currently incarcerated in the Northampton County Prison in lieu of $25,000 monetary bail.
