The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed Tuesday that there were 8,545 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 622,349.
There are 5,995 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19, near double the peak in the spring. Of that number, 1,174 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.
As of Monday, there were 267 new deaths reported for a total of 15,353 deaths attributed to COVID-19.
In nursing and personal care homes, there are 51,999 resident cases of COVID-19, and 9,410 cases among employees, for a total of 61,409 at 1,457 distinct facilities in all 67 counties. Out of the total deaths in Pennsylvania, 8,633 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.
Through Dec. 29, 82,790 doses of the vaccine have been administered.
Local numbers
Carbon County has 54 new cases, bringing the total to 2,652. Deaths remain at 90.
Lehigh County has 19,701 cases to date, an increase of 252. Eight new deaths were reported for a total of 489.
In Luzerne County, there are 16,614 cases, reflecting an increase of 103. Seven new deaths were reported, bringing the total to 446.
Monroe County added 103 new cases, for a total of 5,900. Deaths are at 195 after two more were reported.
In Northampton County, 191 new cases were reported, bringing the running total to 16,084. Five more deaths were reported for a total of 416 to date.
Schuylkill County has 7,572 cases, an increase of 138 cases. There are 240 deaths, an increase of four.
