Man stabbed in Tamaqua dispute

A reported long-standing dispute led to a Tamaqua man being stabbed in the arm and stomach last night.

Tamaqua police were called to 61 Bowe St. at 9:14 p.m. for a fight in the street. The caller said one of the men had been stabbed.On scene, officers found Robert Laughlin sitting in the kitchen with towels being used to stanch blood on his left forearm and stomach area.He was awake and alert, telling officers he and a friend were walking on Bowe Street when they encountered Thomas Karl Fahringer, 57, of 120 Mahanoy St., Tamaqua.The two men argued about an ongoing issue.Tired of the argument, Laughlin said he pushed Fahringer away, causing him to fall to the ground.Fahringer got up and came at Laughlin with a knife, stabbing him several times in the arm and once in the stomach, according to the police report.There was also a slash to his stomach, according to Laughlin's statement. The assailant then fled.As officers were speaking with Laughlin, Fahringer came back to the scene and told officers the knife was at his home, on the kitchen table.He was arrested and the knife was recovered. There was fresh blood on the blade of the 5-inch knife and Fahringer had scrapes on his knee and head. He refused medical treatment.Fahringer declined to make a statement after being read his Miranda warning. He was arraigned before the duty district magistrate on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an instrument of crime and harassment.Bail was set at $25,000. Unable to post the required 10 percent, he was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.Laughlin was transported to Hazleton General Hospital, where he was admitted and scheduled for surgery.
