Schuylkill County roads reported to be ‘terrible’

The National Weather Service State College released the following snow total updates for Schuylkill County as of 7:17 p.m.

Auburn 9 inches; 2 WSW Tamaqua 7.8 inches; Schuylkill Haven 7 inches; Tower City 4.1 inches

“Terrible” is how Schuylkill County Emergency Management Coordinator John Matz described the county roads Wednesday around 6:30 p.m.

He estimated “at least 6 inches” of snow had fallen on the grounds since it started snowing at noon. Matz said heavier snow is expected between 7 p.m. and midnight.

A Facebook post by the agency and LEPC said “roadways throughout the county are very bad. There are numerous accidents and blocked roadways.

We have reports that the following roadways are impassable:

Route 645 in Pine Grove Township into Berks County; Route 183 South from Summit Station into Berks County; Route 54 east of the Hometown exit; Route 901 in Cass Township north on Minersville; Route 209 in Branch Township.

Route 209 between Tamaqua and Coaldale was described as a “parking lot;” State Route 309 and 443 in South Tamaqua; Route 309 at the “Mile Hill” between McAdoo and Hometown; many areas of West Penn Township; and Route 61 on the “Two Miler” between Frackville and Fountain Springs.
