Jim Thorpe Area School Board Vice President Pearl Downs-Sheckler stormed out of the meeting Monday night.
Following a motion by board member Dennis McGinley to vote on the approval of Cindy Kmetz as an administrative assistant, Downs-Sheckler requested tabling the vote to re-evaluate the district's hiring practice. Her motion did not receive a second, and the vote proceeded, with Kmetz's position approved.Downs-Sheckler claimed to resign her position on the spot, and then left the Penn-Kidder Campus gymnasium.Tuesday afternoon, however, she was in touch with the board, and changed her decision."Ms. Downs-Sheckler is a passionate and highly respected member of the Jim Thorpe Area School Board, and she chose to rescind her letter of resignation this afternoon, before the board had acted upon it, therefore she is still a member of the board," Principe said.Downs-Sheckler had argued at the Aug. 8 meeting that there were issues with the board's hiring practices, where the administrative position was initially voted down."I was voted on by the people of the town, and I don't feel it's right to walk off a job that you have been appointed to. Also, if I leave, I can't hold people accountable," Downs-Sheckler said.
