Giving Tree project enters fifth season

The Giving Tree is set to begin Friday night in Tamaqua.

Tammy Sienkiewicz, of Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet, spearheaded this project five years ago to help those in need in the Tamaqua area.

“Talking to people going into rehab and people falling on some hard times, telling us how they’re living out in the street, they’re freezing,” Sienkiewicz said. They don’t have money … or just can’t afford to buy their kids any hats, gloves or scarves. When you can’t afford to buy our kids (something), that’s heartbreaking.”

The tree, located in Depot Square Park, will have wrapped articles of clothing hanging from its branches. People can find hats, gloves, scarves and socks 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Last year, there were over 2,000 items on the tree throughout the season.

“A lot of people are embarrassed to go ask for help. Or it’s the middle of the night and nowhere is open. But the Giving Tree doesn’t ask questions. It just gives.”

The tree will run through February depending on the temperature, Sienkiewicz said.

Items can be dropped off at Hope & Coffee or New Roots Recovery Support Center on Pine Street in Tamaqua.
