One of four in drug bust incident enters guilty plea
One of four defendants in a drug bust incident that occurred earlier this year entered a guilty plea in Carbon County court.
Jason R. Wilk, 30, of Lehighton actually enter pleas in two pending cases. In the drug bust case he pleaded to aggravated assault on a police officer and it the second case he pleaded to driving under the influence, driving under suspension-DUI related and resisting arrest.Drug bustWilk was arrested for his part in an incident that occurred along Route 248 near Bowmanstown on March 8. Agents of the state Attorney General's office, along with members of the county drug task force attempted to stop a vehicle involved in a controlled drug buy that occurred earlier. Officers from Mahoning Township and Jim Thorpe police were also involved.Wilk was the driver of one of two vehicles involved. He fled the scene and led police on a chase. As police pursued Wilke, officer Tyler Meek of Mahoning Township was approaching in the opposite direction. He attempted to stop Wilk's vehicle. Wilk, traveling at a high rate of speed, intentionally struck Meek's unmarked police cruiser. Wilk continued to flee with speeds reaching over 80 mph. Police eventually broke off the chase because of the high speeds. An arrest warrant was issued for Wilk and he was apprehended some time later.On Nov. 23, 2013, state police stopped Wilk for a vehicle violation along Bridge Street in Weissport. He fled on foot but was later apprehended. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance in his blood.Arrested in the drug bust incident were Curtis Margle, 25, of Lehighton; Cynthia Hippenstiel, 24, of Ranshaw; and Robert Fox, 59, of Quakertown.In exchange for the plea to the assault count, the district attorney's office agreed to drop charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, recklessly endangering another person and summary counts.Wilk was scheduled to go on trial Monday on all the counts.The other three defendants are scheduled to have pretrial conferences on Oct. 13 in the DA's office.Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the pleas but deferred sentencing as Wilk must obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation on the DUI charge.
