Christmas angels are needed to buy gifts

Last December, Carbon County’s “angels” helped more than 90 local children through the annual Angel Tree Project at St. Mark’s & St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jim Thorpe.

This year, there are even more tags on the tree. And with in-person gatherings on hold, they’re hoping that local residents will help ensure that all local children receive gifts this holiday season.

“Even though we’re a small community, one thing remains constant, that the people are committed to helping a neighbor in need,” said Karen Horvath, director of music and parish secretary at St. Mark’s and St. John’s.

The Angel Tree Project has been taking place at St. Mark’s & St. John’s for more than a decade.

Donors pick a tag, which shows the child’s age and gender, some suggested necessities like socks, gloves and hats, and a toy.

While tag information can also be given over the phone, Horvath said picking one off the tree is an experience in itself, because donors get to see that they’re part of a collective effort.

“That’s when it hits you. It becomes a reality that there are so many children who might not have a Christmas this year,” she said.

The list of children grows every year. This year there are over 100 children, chosen by the staff of Children & Youth of Carbon County.

Gifts must be returned by Dec. 16.

When the gifts are collected, the caseworkers deliver them to the families.

The church also provides a full Christmas to a family each year. This year, they raised enough money to help three families.

The donors get the good feeling of knowing they helped to brighten a child’s Christmas.

“You’re kind of like Santa,” Horvath said. “It’s exciting that we’re helping to spread joy.”

People can call to make an appointment to pick a name off of the tree.

Appointments are available Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the church office and Wednesday evenings from 5-8 p.m. in the Tolman House, located across Race Street from the church. Gifts can also be dropped off during those hours. For more information, call 570-325-2241 or email markjhn1@ptd.net.
