A late-night fire destroyed a Weatherly residence Saturday and left an elderly woman dead.
Firefighters responded to the 200 block of Entwistle Street shortly after the blaze broke out around 10 p.m.
Weatherly Fire Chief Don Weston said it was fully involved when crews got on the scene, with flames bursting through the roof of the one-story home.
Despite their best efforts, firefighters were unable to save the home's lone occupant.
"We did our best to try and get in," Weston said. "The house was just in such bad shape that we had no chance. Floors were collapsing and it wasn't safe."
Carbon County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik identified the woman as Dolores Rayno, 82.
Nalesnik said an autopsy revealed Rayno died of carbon monoxide toxicity.
Deborah Priore, who lives nearby, said the fire escalated quickly.
"It just went up so quick," she said.
"Before you knew it, and before any firefighters got there, the whole house was in flames. It's just a very sad situation."
A cause was not immediately determined though reports at the scene indicate the fire may have started in the kitchen area of the single-family wood-frame dwelling
Mourners placed a bouquet of flowers into the hands of a statue on the property Sunday.
Weatherly police have ordered people to stay away from the scene.
A state police fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate.
