A New York state resident was caught in the act of burglarizing a Monroe County business.
Pocono Mountain Regional police said at 2:20 a.m. Nov. 6 they were dispatched to the Super Smoke Convenience Store located at 3022 Route 940, in Pocono Summit, for a burglar alarm going off.
Police saw an open back door and could hear someone inside. While the officers were setting up a perimeter around the store a male, later identified as Franklin Vazquez, 57, of Brooklyn, came out of the building, but immediately returned inside when officers gave him commands.
Vazquez then ran out the back of the building and jumped over a fence and began running toward the rear of the building. Police chased him and took him into custody in the parking lot of a nearby CVS store.
Vazquez was found in possession of suspected heroin, cocaine and numerous oxycodone pills. He had $58 which was taken from the cash register of the Super Smoke store. A large duffel bag containing merchandise from the store was in the store, along with a backpack belonging to Vazquez which contained multiple burglary tools including crow bars, bolt cutters and a cordless circular saw.
He was arraigned on felony counts of burglary and criminal trespass and related charges. He remains in Monroe County Correctional Facility, unable to post bail.
