A Carbon County man who violated the registration provisions of Megan's Law as a sexual offender was sentenced to a state prison term on Thursday in the county court.
Truman Bradford Brown, 50, of Lehighton, will serve 21 to 42 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of failure to register as a sexual offender, which he previously pleaded to.State police at Lehighton charged Brown after it was learned he violated the provisions of the law by not reporting his residence during the standard reporting period.Judge Joseph J. Matika noted that state police gave Brown two chances to right the wrong, and he failed those chances. Brown has been ordered by the state of New Jersey to register for the rest of his life as a sexual offender. When a person moves to another state, that provision follows them wherever they go.Brown was unable to speak to the court as he choked back tears. Two friends of his said since they have known him they found him to be a kind and considerate person.Matika said after state police gave him two chances to rectify his registration requirements, which he failed to do, they filed the charges.Matika said, "I hope you get the message going forward (concerning registration)."Matika said any future violation would mean more state prison time.Matika also ordered Brown to supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and when released on parole render 100 hours of community service.He began the jail term immediately.
