Lehighton at PM West
Here’s what you need to know:
THE MCCARROLL BOWL ... Coach Tom McCarroll brings his 3-6 Lehighton Indians to play his uncle James McCarroll’s 3-3 Pocono Mountain West Panthers. This will be the third time the McCarrolls’ teams have played head-to-head. Each school has won once, and both games were decided by just two-point margins.
THE COIN TOSS ... Tom McCarroll invited his uncle to his home for a ceremonial coin toss to determine which team gets to play on its home field. Flipping a 1936 silver dollar given to the McCarrolls of Lehighton by Tom’s wife’s grandmother did not work in the Tribe’s favor. The game will be played at PM West High School.
WHAT’S AT STAKE ... Other than family bragging rights, both coaches are happy to have another game to play after being eliminated from the district playoffs.
“An extra game and an extra week of practice is a great way to send off our seniors,” said Tom. “It’s also good for the younger kids to get some more experience. West has a lot of younger players, so this helps them, too.”
WHEN THE INDIANS HAVE THE BALL ... Expect wide receivers Hunter Crum and Zack Hunsicker to be familiar targets for quarterback Richard Fronheiser. Running back JJ McDowell will get his share of carries as well.
“We have a dozen seniors, and we will get those who don’t start into special teams and game situations that are dictated by the score and the circumstance,” said Tom McCarroll,
THE SKINNY ON THE PANTHERS ... James McCarroll has been the only coach at PM West ever since the Pocono Mountain School District divided many years ago. His Panthers feature an outstanding running back in Jaden Bowens.
“He’s a terrific athlete,” said Tom McCarroll. “If he gets into space from their spread offense, he can score from anywhere on the field.”
Tom says the West defense plays “fast and on the fly,” and comes after you with a “chip on their shoulders.”
“They stood toe-to-toe with Stroudsburg, so that tells you they’re very competitive,” he said.
A MIRROR OF MISTAKES ... “We both shoot ourselves in the foot,” said Tom McCarroll, referring to a plethora of turnovers that have plagued both the Tribe and the Panthers all season long. “That said, I expect a high scoring game and of course, we’d like to win, even if it’s by two points like the first two games.”
