West End news for Nov. 11, 2020

WEPOSC meets

The West End Park and Open Space Commission meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Chestnuthill Township Park building.

Auxiliary meets

The Legion Auxiliary Post 927 will meet at 7 p.m. in the main hall at the post home in Gilbert. The officers will meet at 6 p.m.

PV dress-down

On Tuesday, PVMS students had the option of wearing red, white and blue in honor of Veterans Day with a requested donation of $1.

That continues on Thursday, but the donation is not required, just appreciated.

All proceeds will be donated to the Valor House in Jonas to use for that entity’s Thanksgiving needs.

WELL Board meets

The West End Little League board of directors is slated to meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.

Next week the Thursday WELL meeting is open to the community.

Donation needed

The SFRC at Effort UMC is in need of stuffing mix for its food pantry Thanksgiving distribution. That distribution is set for this Saturday and will be held in conjunction with the regular food distribution at the SFRC.

Anyone wishing to give a donation of stuffing mix may bring it to the church. However, it is best to call to make sure someone is there to receive the donation.

Deadline Thursday

The November pizza sale at McMichaels UMC is now happening. Order pizza from Martha Stout at 570-992-6742 by Thursday.

Pickup is set for Nov. 21.

Beard competition

Who has the best beard is a question being asked at the PV Intermediate School, as the No Shave November continues at the school through Nov. 30.

Voting will take place in the cafeteria Dec. 7 through Dec. 11.

Funds realized will support the Holiday Families in Need Committee.

Blood drives

Miller-Keystone is collecting at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville on Nov. 18, beginning at noon.

Call 800-B-A-DONOR (223-6667) to reach Miller-Keystone.

The American Legion Post 927 blood drive in Gilbert is happening on Nov. 20. A few appointments may still be available during its slated drive from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) now to make a lifesaving donation.

Soup sale

Effort UMC is holding its final soup sale for 2020. Soups this month will be: hearty minestrone as well as cream of broccoli with cheese. The sale ends Nov. 18, with a pickup date of Nov. 22.

Call the church office at 570-629-1890 to place your order. All profits go toward the Connectional portion of the church apportionments.

Last breakfast

McMichaels UMC is having its final donation-only breakfast for the year from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Breakfast will be served outside or in one’s car.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC is having its November distribution from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. This will also be the Thanksgiving dinner items distribution day.

Reservations are recommended.

Indoor worship

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville has resumed indoor service. Services are held at 5 p.m. Saturday, an informal spoken service, and at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Masks are required and physical distancing is practiced.

Special services

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Saylorsburg, continues to meet both in-person and virtually every Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Anyone wishing to attend virtually can log on to https://www.facebook.com/stpeterssaylorsburg/live/ or https://twitch.tv/stpsaylorsburg to join the service.

This Sunday, the church will celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday.

During the 10 a.m. worship service, Catherine Sufrich, CSM, will bring the message, along with special music, into the sanctuary. This special Sunday is designed to honor and celebrate Native American culture. Cathy will speak on the commonalities between Native Americans and Christians. Included will be ways the Native Americans sought God and how He finds us.

The church will also open its doors on Nov. 15 to community residents who are experiencing grief and loss following the death of a loved one. GriefShare, a recovery support group, helps one face these challenges and move toward rebuilding one’s life. A special single session called How to Make It Through the Holidays will be held in the church from 3 to 5 p.m. Reservations are requested so the church will be prepared with materials. Call 570-992-7311 and leave a message for M. Beers, GriefShare facilitator.

All CDC guidelines will be observed.
