A bomb threat at Carbon County Courthouse was called in by a man whose coworker feared failing a drug test with the county probation department, according to investigators.
Both men now face felony charges in connection with the Oct. 21 incident, which caused the evacuation of the courthouse and surrounding buildings.
On Tuesday Carbon County District Attorney Michael S. Greek announced charges against Jason Bracero, of Jim Thorpe, and Christopher Ohl, of Lehighton.
Bracero allegedly made the threat to the courthouse using a prepaid phone provided by Ohl.
According to a statement from the DA’s office, Ohl was scheduled for a urine test at the Carbon County Adult Probation office, but was concerned about failing the test.
Bracero offered to call in a bomb threat for Ohl, and Ohl bought the prepaid cell phone which was used in the threat, investigators said.
Cell phone tower data led detectives to the location where the call was made. Video surveillance footage obtained from the scene allegedly showed Bracero walking away from Ohl’s car with the phone.
The District Attorney said the Carbon County Detectives and Jim Thorpe Police Department provided a quick response based on an anonymous tip.
“Our detectives were preparing search warrants on a laptop in the county parking during the evacuation,” Greek said.
Bracero and Ohl face charges including terroristic threats and threats to use weapons of mass destruction. They are currently being held at Carbon County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges.
