Northern Lehigh tops Schuylkill Haven
Northern Lehigh won its first ever District 11 girls soccer game on Wednesday in flamboyant style.
Using forceful aggressiveness and calculative teamwork, the Bulldogs overwhelmed Schuylkill Haven in the quarterfinal round of Class 1A competition.
The Bulldogs scored the game’s first six goals and cruised to a 6-3 victory. All the goals by the Hurricanes came in the final six-and-a-half minutes of the game.
Five different players scored for the Bulldogs. Two of those goals were by sophomore Caitlyn Kirk, who also had an assist.
It’s her first time in high school play that she scored twice.
Kirk said her team was excited to be in the district playoffs.
“We were totally ready,” she said. “We had a lot of practice; a lot of preparation. We were totally all excited. Like, we were ready and we were going to do it. We wanted to come in knowing we were going to win.”
Head coach Jason Reinhard agreed.
“We’ve been working all week on linking up better; coming out of the back and really progressing the ball up the field,” he said. “Boy did the practice pay off.”
It was Kirk who scored the first goal of the night, slamming it at an angle from about the 10-yard line past Haven goalkeeper Lexi Davis within the first six minutes of the game. Shaina Mazzocca got the assist, her first of two for the night.
Fifteen minutes later, junior Sophia Lear scored, getting the first goal of her career. The scoring sequence was kicked off when Emily Hunsicker dribbled almost the length of the field. There were about five short passes before Victoria Hanna flicked the ball to Lear, who whacked it into the net from about 15 yards out.
Kristin Guelcher got the third goal for the Dawgs with 15:21 left in the half. She took a pass from Paige Craddock, and zipped it straight forward from about 15 yards out to make the score 3-0.
The fourth and final score of the first half came by Kaylee Wilk at 10:06, with an assist from Mazzocca.
A pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half - by Kirk and Victoria Hanna - gave Northern Lehigh a 6-0 lead.
“This group of girls plays so hard, they’ll sell out to win,” Reinhard said, referring to their ability to leap into the fire to make a play. “They’ll do whatever it takes. I am so very proud of them.”
All three of Haven’s scores were by Nadia Zimmerman, two of which were long shots from the sideline that came with 6:31, 3:06 and 1:30 to play.
