Pine Grove tops Raiders in PKs
Ethan Hannevig was 12 yards and one accurate shot away from virtually sealing a Pine Grove victory over Tamaqua.
He couldn’t deliver.
But 43 minutes of game time - and seven penalty kicks later - Hannevig got another chance - and this time he buried it.
Hannevig’s goal in the shootout portion of Tuesday’s District 11 Class 2A soccer quarterfinal round gave Pine Grove a 3-2 victory over Tamaqua.
“I’m glad for Ethan,” said Pine Grove coach Marv Weber. “It was a good opportunity for him to get some redemption, and he took advantage of it.”
With Pine Grove leading 2-1 and just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Tamaqua was whistled for a penalty in the box.
Hannevig was selected to take the penalty shot, but hit it wide of the net.
It gave Tamaqua new life, and with the clock winding down in regulation, the Raiders took advantage of it.
A perfect free kick from just over the midfield line by Tamaqua’s Zachery Campomizzi landed at the feet of teammate Ian Davis. Davis settled the ball, quickly spun, and drilled a perfect shot into the upper left corner of the net with just: 51 remaining.
“Our kids showed a lot of heart battling back and forcing overtime,” said Tamaqua coach Jim Fisher. “We might have fell short in the end, but I love our heart.
“I thought we had it won a couple of times in overtime, but we just couldn’t finish our chances.”
Neither team was able to finish their chances during a pair of 15-minute sudden death overtime periods, sending the contest to a shootout.
Tamaqua won the coin flip and opted to go first in the alternating shot, five-shooters format.
The Raiders’ Davis quickly put his team ahead, and Brady Sherry added another Tamaqua conversion from the third slot. But the Raiders failed to convert on their second and fourth shots. Meanwhile, Hunter Deichert, Derrick Boyer and Hunter Legarht found the left side of the net on the Cardinals’ first three kicks.
That brought up Hannevig for Pine Grove’s fourth shot with his team leading 3-2 and Tamaqua having just one shooter left.
He didn’t hesitate as he struck a hard, low shot into the left corner.
“It feels good,” said Hannevig. “I was feeling some pressure (after missing the penalty kick in regulation).
“After Tamaqua tied the game, I felt like it was on me, and that I had let the team down. So it was nice to get another shot at it.”
GOAL SCORERS ... Tamaqua’s Tyler Steigerwalt opened the scoring with 16:28 left in the first half off an assist from Michael Shlanta. Pine Grove then got goals by Boyer and Ryan Sarge in the last 3:46 of the first half to take a 2-1 lead.
PRACTICE ... Shootouts aren’t held during the regular season. so this marked both teams’ initial time this season in a shootout. Both coaches said they were prepared for it. “We’ve been working on them every day for the last week-and-a-half,” said Pine Grove’s Weber. Tamaqua’s Fisher said, “We have worked on them quite a bit, and most practices our kids have been burying them.”
NUMBERS GAME ... Tamaqua had a 16-13 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners. Raiders’ goalie Luke Verta made six saves, while Pine Grove’s Landon Schaeffer made four saves, including a pair of huge stops within the span of seconds during the first OT.
