Two candidates are seeking the seat representing the 183rd Legislative District.

Democrat Phillips Armstrong will face Republican Zach Mako in the Nov. 8 general election.The 183rd Legislative District includes, in Lehigh County, the townships of South Whitehall (districts 5, 6 and 8), Washington and Whitehall (districts 7, 10 and 11) and the Borough of Slatington; and in Northampton County, the townships of Allen, Lehigh, Moore (Beersville and Klecknersville districts) and the boroughs of North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport.The Lehigh Valley Press, a Times News affiliate, asked the candidates the following question: Why are you the best candidate for this office?Their responses:

Phillips ArmstrongAs president of the Whitehall board of commissioners, I oversaw a balanced budget that eliminated our debt, funded our police pensions and did it without raising taxes. This year, we’ll be lowering our garbage fees 10 percent. I’m a senior citizen, so I know the necessity of real and immediate property tax reform. I’ll advocate for property tax relief to keep seniors in their homes. As a former teacher, I’ll protect our schools’ ability to unleash the potential of every child. Finally, I’ll fight for government reform. I pledge to never take any perks, per diems or legislator’s pension.

Zach MakoI decided to run for office after Julie Harhart announced she was not seeking re-election. I am proud to have her endorsement, and I will continue to be an independent voice, standing up to the Harrisburg special interests and fighting for our values.As a lifelong resident of the 183rd District, I believe taxpayers deserve someone who will look out for them, which is why I support eliminating our property taxes and standing up to Gov. Wolf’s radical tax-and-spend agenda. I will work to make our business environment more attractive so we can attract more jobs to the area.
