Man charged with stealing delivery driver’s car

A man who stole a vehicle that belonged to a delivery driver at a Palmerton business has been caught.

Borough police Chief Randy Smith said the incident occurred at 4:28 p.m. Saturday when a silver 2001 Saturn was stolen from Papa Al’s in the 300 block of Lehigh Avenue.

“Left the keys in the car, was inside the restaurant, when he came out, the car was gone,” Smith said.

Smith said video surveillance was viewed by the officer on duty, and the suspect was identified as Chance Whiteman, 20, whose address is listed as transient.

He said police have dealt with Whiteman in the past for a prior incident.

Smith said the vehicle has not been located as of this time.

Papa Al’s expressed its frustration with a post on its Facebook page.

“Pretty ridiculous when our driver bust his (expletive) working and gets his car stolen while at work,” the post reads. “Please, we are asking that you all keep a look out for this ‘thug’ who has nothing better to do but to go around and steal someone’s vehicle.”

Smith said Whiteman was apprehended by Pennsylvania State Police, and was brought to the borough police station.

Whiteman faces charges of theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility.
