The search continues

Residents of Barrett and Price townships stayed inside and away from windows today as law enforcement authorities intensified their search for Eric Frein, accused of the sniper ambush killing of Cpl. Bryon Dickson and the wounding of Trooper Alex Douglass at the state police barracks at Blooming Grove, Pike County on Sept. 12.

State police this afternoon formed line-of-sight coverage along Bear Town Road, Stoney Run Lane and Blue Ridge drive in Canadensis, close to Frein's family home. The heavily-wooded area remains virtually shut down to the public as of late this afternoon.Police, wearing bulletproof vests and armed with high-powered rifles were exercising "extreme precautionary measures" in the hunt for Frein, 31, an expert marksman and self-styled survivalist with a love of war games and a grudge against the government.Law enforcement officers -- State police were joined by U.S. Marshalls, FBI agents, the state Game Commission, and a New York State K-9 unit in their search for Frein.-- used thermal imaging, helicopters and other methods to search for Frein throughout the day. After police lined their cruisers along roads in Frein's neighborhood, with each car in sight of the other, an officer was heard to say, "they're going to start to push."At 2:44 p.m., police radio conversations indicated thermal imaging had picked up something moving parallel to Blue Ridge Drive. At 2:46 p.m., an officer said two federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents were "150 yards into the woods."At 3:16 p.m., a Special Emergency Response Team was "approaching into woods toward the hot spot." At 4:59 p.m., the officer said "SERT will be exiting from the hot spot onto Bear Town Road, so use caution when they're coming out."At 5:16 p.m., the officer said that "SERT will be making an approach from Bear Town Road to the hot spot, all along Blue Ridge."As of early evening, however, there was no indication that Frein had been found.Police have vowed to capture Frein, now in his eighth day on the run. Police have described Frein as armed and dangerous. Frein is accused of ambushing Dickson, 38, and Douglass, 31, at 11:50 p.m. during a shift change.A man walking his dog on Monday discovered the Jeep Frein was using. Police found a Social Security card, a driver's license, two spent .308 cartridge casing that matched bullets recovered from the shooting scene and other evidence, including camouflage face paint. A search of the home Frein lived with his parents turned up a book on how to get a job as a sniper, more cartridge casings of the same type as were found in the Jeep and at the barracks, and other evidence linking him to the crime. An AK-47 and a .308 rifle with a scope were missing. The search intensified Friday evening when gunshots were heard in the area near Frein's home. Police closed roads and told residents to shelter in place as the hunt drew close. At one point, police surrounded a house with a kicked-out screen door.As police search, the area is hunkering down. Football games have been canceled, schools closed and church services not held because people are afraid. The FBI, which has placed Frein on its Ten Most Wanted list, is offering a $100,000 reward for his capture. PA CrimeStoppers is offering $75,000.
