An elderly man was killed in a crash on Route 209 near LaRose's skating rink just before 9 this morning.
According to reports on the scene, a work van was heading north on Route 209 when it crossed over the line and struck a Carbon County Community Transit bus.
The bus, which was headed south, was struck just behind the driver's door and pushed into an earthen embankment. A passenger in the back was killed.
The driver of the utility van was trapped, and is reported to have serious leg injuries.
Franklin Township police are investigating with assistance from state police from the Lehighton and Hazleton barracks.
The Carbon County Community Transit bus is operated by Easton Coach Company.
Joe Scott, President & CEO of Easton Coach Company released the following statement, "I am very saddened to report that this accident has claimed the life of one of the passengers on the bus. Another passenger on the bus has been taken to the hospital with injuries. We are also aware that the driver of the other vehicle sustained significant injuries but we don't know anything more about his condition at this time. The operator of our vehicle was taken to the hospital for a precautionary examination."
"Our thoughts are with the affected families and friends of everyone involved and we are indebted to the local authorities for acting quickly to care for those who were injured," Scott said.
