Local Roundup: Results from April 16

Northwestern rolled to wins in both baseball and softball on Tuesday, while Palmerton recorded a baseball victory and its boys track team swept a tri-meet.

BASEBALL

Northern Lehigh-Palmerton

A late-inning surge pushed Palmerton to a 7-1 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

The Blue Bombers trailed heading into the home fifth, but combined for seven runs in the fifth and sixth frames to improve to 7-4.

Palmerton’s Ryan King had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs, while Eric Nothstein added a triple, a run scored and three RBIs. Tanner Burnett chipped in with two runs and a double.

For the Bulldogs (3-7), Brandon Hess finished with a single and a run scored.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Northwestern erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning to cruise to a 15-1 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Rafe Perich paced the Tigers (9-2) with two singles, a double, a run scored and four RBIs, while Nick Henry chipped in with two singles, three runs and an RBI.

Brandon Mengel also finished with two singles, a run and an RBI, with Justin Holmes contributing two runs and two RBIs.

James Lordi, Jake Schwartz and Colin Binder had the hits for the Olympians (5-5).

Lordi’s hit was a double.

Panther Valley-Minersville

Panther Valley edged Minersville for a 3-2 Schuylkill League win.

Mason Goida led the Panthers with a double, two singles, a run scored and an RBI.

Chuck Byers (two singles, two runs) and Aaron Miller (two singles, RBI) contributed in the victory.

The win improved PV to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Pine Grove got the best of Tamaqua for a 6-2 Schuylkill League win.

The Blue Raiders’ Nick Breiner recorded a single and a run scored, while Tate Ligenza and Sean Lavine both had doubles. Ligenza struck out seven and walked three.

Down 4-2, Tamaqua had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out, but couldn’t break through.

The loss dropped the Blue Raiders to 2-9 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Aaron Mason led the Colts with two singles, a run scored and a stolen base, while Alex Kubishin added a single, RBI and a stolen base. Mike Minchhoff also chipped in with a single, run scored and an RBI.

Marian is now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.

A 10-run second inning propelled Northwestern to a 16-0 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Tiger hurler Brynn Balliet didn’t allow a hit in the three-inning contest, striking out four and walking two.

Molly Mitman sparked the Northwestern offense with two hits, one a grand slam, and two runs scored.

Isabella Teprovich blasted a two-run homer and scored three times, while Balliet added two singles and two runs.

The Tigers, who have a six-game winning streak, improved to 9-2.

Skyler Searfoss paced the Olympians (2-9; 1-5) with a single, double and a run scored, while Kristen Pompa added a single and a run.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.

The closest match came at No. 1 singles, where the Blue Bombers’ Nate Andress took the Crusaders’ Patrick Bassil to three sets.

Palmerton is 4-14 on the season.

Palisades

Palmerton had a strong showing in its Colonial League tri-meet with Catasauqua and Palisades.

The Blue Bomber boys downed the Pirates (99-51) and Roughies (133-13). The Palmerton girls earned a split, topping Catasauqua (93-52), but falling to Palisades (109-40).

Jacob Martinez continued his dominance of middle and long distances for the Bombers, winning the 800, 1600 and 3200, while Aaron Stasko took both the 100 and 200.

Maddison Beahm prevailed in the long and triple jumps for the Palmerton girls.
